Joshua Anand Slater is an Indian-American conductor and composer best known for his work programming, managing and conducting Trinity Wall Street’s “indispensable and unmissable” classical concert series (The New York Times). While Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Hartford he founded the Cathedral Bach Festival in cooperation with Hartford Symphony, leading soloists and orchestra from Emmanuel Music, Boston to critical acclaim. As Assistant Director of Music for Trinity, Joshua co-produced recordings of the Pulitzer-winning opera Angel’s Bone, the Grammy-nominated recording of Glass’s Symphony No. 5. He is an active orchestrator and arranger for numerous contemporary American composers, and revised and orchestrated works for composers associated with Beth Morrison Projects, ECS Publishing and numerous others. Joshua is a long term advocate for other visible minority artists, and is the Founding Artistic Director of fujit productions, (founded 2009), a concert organization committed to promoting underrepresented and silenced voices. He has led masterclasses and concerts from Bombay to London, and acted as assistant conductor for numerous productions including Amherst Early Music’s Il Pastor Fido.
A believer in the value of learning and participation in classical music and the choral tradition for visible minority communities Joshua has expanded, reformed, and founded community choir and chorister programs in Connecticut, New York and Boston. Joshua studied conducting with Julian Wachner, Anne Howard Jones and David Hoose and took a B.A. and Mus. M with distinction from Boston University. Mr. Slater is an active recitalist, and studied piano with Virginia Eskin.
